Back to work

My last week off passed really slowly but I did not get a chance to get much done. Ainsley was recovering from her surgery and it was a long and painful recovery. I thought she would be sore for 1-2 days and then do well. It was a full 8 days before she was feeling ok. She was horribly painful, swollen and sore. She would not talk, eat or drink for pretty much that entire week. I could not get her to drink anything, I even tried syringing stuff which she spit out. We had ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, soda, gatorade, juice, popsicles, etc. No luck. She spit out her pain medicine too. It was so sad as I know she hurt, but all I could do was try to give her fluids and her medicine - which she refused. She slept ok after the first 3 days, thank goodness. She was drooling profusely as she did not want to swallow.

We rechecked with the surgeon on the 29th of April and he said when they don't drink, they take longer to heal- go figure. Amazingly, she must have listened when I spoke with the doctor. In the car on the way home, she asked for a drink and finished a juice. Then she ate chicken nuggets and fries ( we made a special stop at Wendy's). She seemed to suddenly feel better. She was talking more and much happier Friday afternoon.

My Dad came to visit for a few days last week. He spent some good quality time with all of us and even bonded with Ben! I left Ben with "Papa" while Ainsley and I were at the doctor and everything went great. I was proud of my Dad. When I came back, he had changed two diapers ( one poopy), given Ben a bottle, and just put him down for a nap! Go Dad!

Ainsley and I spent some time at the pool- the water was still cold, but we had fun. Ainsley was much more herself over the weekend. She was much happier thank goodness! She actually ate pretty well too which is great. She lost 3.5 pounds, 10% of her body weight between the long term strep and her surgery. She was eating poorly for a few months with her bad throat and not eating at all with her recovery.

I went back to work on May 2nd. Everything went well and everybody did well. Ben is home with a Nanny and he really likes her. Ainsley went to school and was pretty happy to go, after a 10 day break after her surgery. She was a little sad because we got there early and her friends were not there yet. There were a few tears from that. While I was off, I was taking her to school closer to 9 am and she was one of the last to arrive. When I work, I have to get her there early. We walked in and she said, "None of my friends are here." (Tears). She did have a good day though.

My day was good at work too. I had a full schedule with my morning spent in surgery. It was not crazy busy but just right. Everyone seemed glad to have me back too which was nice!

It was a slightly busy and hectic evening last night though- making dinner, bathing and getting the kids to bed, phew! Then to clean up and prepare for the next day. Exhausting.

We are glad you're back! I hope Ainsley is young enough that she won't remember this horrible period of her life. Glad she's back on the road to good health!
