A Good Deed

My sister arrived in town yesterday and we went out this morning on a shopping expedition. We left pretty early, trying to get to the mall and beat the crowds. We were driving down the large 4 lane divided highway by my home and saw some cars hitting their brakes and swerving. I saw a dog in the median, then a second dog joined him. It was a large white boxer and a large Rottweiler. They were just standing in the road, looking very confused. I asked my sister to pull over to the side of the road. She got out to see if they were friendly, were wearing collars with tags- the Rottweiler came right up to her. The rotty had a collar but not tags, the other dog wasn't wearing a collar. Another car pulled over to help us. The boxer seemed pretty skittish- just jogging around, and periodically going right back out into the road. I was terrified I would see him get hit by a car right in front of us. Luckily, we were able to load both dogs into the back of my sister's SUV- though they would not jump in. Now, what to do with them... Call 311? the dogs would be gone by the time anyone got there; leave them- not an option as they would have been hit by a car with such a busy road; take them home? to work? to TLAC? People from work should be proud that I did not take them there- I opted to take them to TLAC instead. My sister has an iPhone- which is really awesome- so she took a picture of the dogs and we emailed it to Dan saying - here's an early Christmas Present.

The dogs were really pretty good in the back of the SUV- just hanging out. We got to TLAC and were there just before they opened. I filled out paperwork with where they were found and put them together in a drop off cage. It was so sad, I felt like I was abandoning them. Even harder was realizing that the shelter was closed the next 2 days for the holidays. I was worried the owner would not have much luck in finding the dogs.

While we turned around and headed for the mall- we thought about craig's list. I called Dan and asked if he could post an add on Craig's list with the picture and information. Dan called me back 20 minutes later. Technology is amazing. While he was placing his add, the dogs' owner placed a lost post on Craig's list. Dan was checking his post and saw the 2 dogs lost post and read the description- it matched mine perfectly. He called the lady and told her where I found the dogs and that I had taken them to TLAC. The lady was very thankful that we stopped and has hopefully been reunited with her dogs. My sister and I felt so much better knowing that the dogs would be going home.

What a great story. I can just picture you on the side of the road, eight months pregnant trying to catch two dogs. You did the right thing...gotta love Craig's List.

How wonderful that the dogs were found so quickly. A missing dog would have totally ruined my Christmas. Good for you both!
