Dan and I attended a Childbirth Preparation Class this weekend. We were in class for 6 hours each day- making for some long days, but well worth it. My original Doctor recommended the birthing class at St David's- he said it was the best class in town. So, that is where we went. The instructor was awesome- she was a nurse and doula. I thought it was really informative, she was very knowledgeable, and I really liked her personality. I am really considering getting a doula - in particular her. There were 11 other couples in the class, most were about our age. In general, the people seemed pretty well informed and intelligent (or so I thought initially). It is really funny how you can learn a lot about people in such a short time. Towards the end of today, I was getting tired and a little irritable with all the fairly dumb questions people kept asking. Here are some examples:
1) When can we start trying to have a second baby?
(Seriously- don't you think you should at least have this baby first, see how it goes, recover, then consider another baby? or ask your doctor?)
2) When ( how many months) can my son go to a UT football game? This from the guy who is going to give his son a middle name of Hookem. Seriously.
3) Will the anesthesiologist be in the room the entire time to titrate the dose of the epidural? Yeah, cause they have NOTHING else to do but take care of one patient. When this dad was told that the doctor would likely be dealing with multiple patients and procedures, he comments- Sounds like he will be really distracted. Similar comments about OBGYNS. HIGH maintenance was my thought about him.
4) Do the cabinets ever get in the way during labor? ( in labor and delivery room) Yeah, all the time, that is why they build them over the labor and delivery bed.
5) What is on the identification bracelets they put on the baby? Uh, DUH?
Dumb comments:
1) In regards to having a second baby 11-12 months after the first- how do you nurse both of them. That's why they have two boobs, with hand motions ( from the UT guy)
There were plenty more questions and some funny comments, but these are the main ones I remember. Overall, it was a great experience and I learned a lot. It is still overwhelming to think about and it is coming up very soon! Yikes.

Those comments/questions are pretty astounding. I know a lot of Aggies who named their kid KYLE (after the football field) but I cannot get over Hookem!!!! Sounds like a better dog name than a kid name!
OMG...I sooo would have laughed out loud! How did you control yourself? Yep, I think some of these people need to hang "stupid" signs around their neck. Of course, being an experienced mom, I know EVERYTHING there is to know about parenting, wink wink;)
Hookem? Are you serious??!!! Now, I'm a longhorns fan, but I would never....Did the wife of the "two boobs" guy at least look embarrassed?
