Weekend

Saturday morning I ventured to work - Remi has had several bad urinary tract infections recently. We just finished a 2 month course of antibiotics 3 weeks ago as a treatment. I recultured her urine this week and got the results yesterday. The infection was already back ( which I suspected) and now it is resistant to all oral drugs, only susceptible to injectables. I went to work to pick up amikacin to start her on. I am at a loss as to how to prevent these infections and I am really worried that it will come back after this treatment- then what will I use?? I ordered a cranberry concentrate powder yesterday that some people on VIN recommend. It can help to prevent bacterial attachment to the bladder wall- hopefully it works. Also, with my free time, I will try to take her in to see the internists to see if they can find anything or have any other recommendations. Poor Remi- I know she feels bad and she really didn't enjoy her first injection- she was sore at the injection site for a few hours.

Ainsley got her first bottle this weekend. While I was at the clinic, she stayed home with Dad. She woke up and was hungry, so he offered her a bottle which she took well. We had decided that we would introduce a bottle this weekend since she is almost 4 weeks old so that she learns there are different sources of milk. Dan tried to help me out with my sleep by giving her a bottle in the middle of the night feeding. It didn't really work so well. I slept upstairs so that I could sleep without interruption. But, I could hear her crying when she was up- and I couldn't go back to sleep. It is a very stressful thing hearing your baby cry. Anyway, she was having issues with gas in her stomach and abdomen so Dan had trouble with calming her after feeding her. She ended up spitting up all that she was fed - all over him. This has already happened to me several times- it is amazing how much they can get up at once and how wet and nasty it can make everything, including you. After spitting up, she continued to fuss and got hungry again so he came to get me. It was nice to be able to soothe her and get her to sleep- I felt very needed and loved at that particular time. She was nuzzled into my neck and holding on to my arm with hers. So this morning- we were both sleep deprived. I think it is great that she took the bottle well, but we will likely save it for when I have to be away for a few hours- she seems to take it better during the day anyway.

She is doing better overall with her sleeping. I think she was going through a growth spurt ( I have read they have them at 3 weeks) last week when she kept wanting to be fed every few hours. It only lasted 2 days, then we were back to a better schedule of feeding at 11, 2-3, and 5-6. She sleeps well in her bassinet at night, but prefers to be held during the day. I am sometimes able to get her to sleep for a few hours in her bassinet or bouncy chair during the day, but not very consistently. Usually I put her down and she will wake up in 30-45 minutes.

We have hung out at home over the weekend, watching a few movies on tv and sharing taking care of the baby. We enjoyed the gorgeous day yesterday and sat outside for a few hours on our porch and then took a nice walk.

What a wonderful time. I miss just snuggling Cole for hours at a time. When you guys are ready for a night out, give me a call. Cole and I will come watch the baby.

OK I'm jealous. NONE of my kids took to the bottle easily. It was always a horrible struggle for the first week or so. You don't realize how lucky ya'll are.

My sister would give my baby a bottle at about 11 pm when she was visiting (I went to bed early) and then I got up for the next feeding... around 2 am? Can't remember exactly, its all fuzzy... That might be a strategy to try also. Sounds like you guys are doing a great job so far.

It is amazing how much those little ones can spit up and how disgusting it is when they are so sweet.
